Implementation support to help you get up and running
When you get started with EOS, your first goal is to get things up and running successfully.
During phase 1 (The Access Phase), your assigned partnership director works closely with your assigned program lead to establish a relationship and support your efforts to educate and engage staff via:
- Direct support for your initial annual survey efforts.
- Facilitated site visits and coaching helps you to educate staff around the program and data insights they’ll receive. while exposing them to the adult mindsets and barriers that slow students down.
- Trusted Adult training and outreach planning that helps you to develop tailored plans for student and staff.
Workshops & training that engage staff and translate data to action
Our partnership team features passionate staff who have been educators, district administrators and consultants. EOS partnership directors deliver workshops that inspire and educate staff in equal measure. Their work helps you to build and sustain program momentum by orienting your staff on ways to expand access and opportunity including:
- Exposing teachers, counselors and other staff to important concepts including the cues and conditions of belonging.
- Mechanisms for setting expectations, gathering feedback and assessing students.
- Student-centered teaching approaches and methods that build more engaging advanced course classrooms for all students. Check out our recent work in AP US History and US Government & Politics classes
Program facilitation support that helps you sustain results long-term
After the initial spike of energy and action, districts need support to ensure sustained results. Our partnerships team sticks with you to ensure that action plans in phase 1 and 2 turn into standardized systems that consistently increase access and opportunity for more students to pursue advanced coursework.
EOS staff will deliver remote thought-partnership and in-person sessions to support you in:
- Developing policies and practices that further remove barriers for your students.
- Identifying ways to use your data and reports to continually improve access and student experiences in advanced course classrooms.

"The mindsets of our teachers have shifted from 'you belong in this course,' or 'you do not belong in this course' to an idea that everyone should have access, and that 'I know that this course might be challenging, but we're here to support you to be successful.”

I think with EOS, what it really did for our staff and students was changed how they took the approach to enrolling in advanced courses; removing just looking at prerequisites or what your grades are, what your GPA is, but really looking at your passion and your drive and what your plans are post secondary.
And I think that that's so important -- looking at the entire student way past your previous GPA, or behavior history, but really what are your goals as an individual? Where do you see yourself once you leave high school? And what can we do here to set the tone for you so that you can accomplish that; whether it's a four year university, two year, or trade school, we want to set you up on the best trajectory for that.
I think the EOS program pushes your thinking and challenges you to be a bit more creative in your approach to how you work with students, and how you get them to a level academically that they didn't feel that they could achieve. And it's great, because I've always been told you can use the same recipe, however, the way you change the outcome is the amount of energy, the love and the time you put into something, and I think EOS brings us to that energy, that time and love we put into educating our students."

Equal Opportunity Schools began our partnership with the city of Chicago District 299 in the fall of 2017 with six public schools. We have since grown to 45 schools and a total of five cohorts.
Despite a global pandemic, remote learning, and racial tensions throughout the nation, schools have persevered in the work of breaking down barriers to increase access, belonging, and success in rigorous college and career-prep secondary school courses for underserved and under represented students.
