The daughter of Seattle Public Schools educators (and a former Seattle Public Schools student herself), Alison Gazarek grew up observing the inequities inherent in the system which inspired her commitment to free and equal public education for all students. Alison now serves as a Partnership Managing Director at Equal Opportunity Schools. Read “11 Questions with Community Leadership Team” for expert advice on how to enhance equity in your school district.
Dr. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee was the first Chinese woman to earn a PhD in economics from Colombia University. Dr. Lee originally attended Barnard College, an all-women’s school, that was founded because Colombia, like many universities in 1912, refused to admit women. Triumphant and educated, Dr. Lee published her research as a book called “The Economic History of China” in 1921.
In celebration of #AAPIHeritageMonth, may Dr. Lee’s story encourage you to continue breaking barriers that restrict equal access to the knowledge and dreams that we all deserve.
Join us in honoring Dr. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee by leaving a tribute on our social media channels @EqualOppSchools.
