Equal Opportunity Schools celebrates women of color, like Charlotte Ray, who started her career teaching at Howard University and became the first Black women lawyer in the United States. She was also the first woman to graduate from Howard University School of Law, the first woman admitted to the District of Columbia Bar, and the first woman admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia.

Equal Opportunity Schools: Celebrating Sonia Sotomayor

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. Equal Opportunity Schools celebrates women of color, like Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic and Latina Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and one of five women who have served on the court. She was nominated by President Barack Obama and has served since 2009. Sotomayor has been identified with concern for the rights of defendants, calls for reform of the criminal justice system, and making impassioned dissents on issues of race, gender and ethnic identity.

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. Equal Opportunity Schools celebrates women of color, like Yuri Kochiyama, a Japanese America civil rights activist who spent her life advocating for Black, Latinx, Native American and Asian American communities. In 2014, the White House honored Kochiyama for her life’s pursuit of social justice.

Equal Opportunity Schools: Celebrating Wilma Mankiller

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. Equal Opportunity Schools celebrates women of color, like Wilma Mankiller, the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. As Chief, Mankiller focused on education, job training, and healthcare for her people. Under her leadership, tribal enrollment tripled, employment doubled, infant mortality declined, and educational achievement rose. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.

Equal Opportunity Schools: Celebrating Dorothy Height

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. Equal Opportunity Schools celebrates women of color, like Dorothy Height, the godmother of the women’s movement. Height began her career in New York City as an educator, led the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) for four decades, and advised the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA). In 1994, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
