Equal Opportunity Schools celebrates Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month by paying tribute to civil rights leader Thelma Garcia Buchholdt who was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives becoming the first Filipinx American legislator elected in the U.S. and served four terms. In 2009, she was inducted into the Alaska Women’s Hall of Fame in recognition of her significant contributions to Alaska as a legislator, civil rights leader, author, and lawyer. Prior to her move to Alaska, she had a career as an elementary school teacher.

Dr. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee was the first Chinese woman to earn a PhD in economics from Colombia University. Dr. Lee originally attended Barnard College, an all-women’s school, that was founded because Colombia, like many universities in 1912, refused to admit women. Triumphant and educated, Dr. Lee published her research as a book called “The Economic History of China” in 1921.
In celebration of #AAPIHeritageMonth, may Dr. Lee’s story encourage you to continue breaking barriers that restrict equal access to the knowledge and dreams that we all deserve.
